Just a few hours by train from Kandy, the Kandy-Ella line offers one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys. Passengers cross steep tea-country slopes, misty hills and countless bridges while trains wind through the central highlands.
Sri Lanka Railways runs regular services with unreserved third class and more comfortable second and first class carriages. Window seats on the left side traveling from Kandy toward Ella tend to offer the best valley views. Purchase tickets at major stations or use reputable tour operators to secure reserved seats during peak season.
The Nine Arch Bridge, locally called the Bridge in the Sky, sits between the small stations of Ella and Demodara. Engineers built the structure in the early 20th century using brick, stone and cement, creating the iconic nine-span curve that attracts photographers. Visitors can reach the bridge by a 20-30 minute walk from Ella town or by a short tuk‑tuk ride, and vantage points below and above the bridge offer different angles for shots.
Best times for clear views are the drier months from December to April, and early morning light reduces haze. Keep a safe distance from tracks, avoid standing on the bridge when trains approach, and wear sturdy shoes for the unpaved paths. Carry cash for tuk‑tuks and small vendors, carry water, and allow extra time for delays on local services.
Hiking Little Adam’s Peak or visiting Ravana Falls makes for a full-day itinerary around Ella. Local guesthouses and cafes provide charming places to stay and sample highland teas. Plan trains and transfers ahead to secure scenic seats and make the most of one of Sri Lanka’s signature rail experiences.
