AKROTIRI, CYPRUS (SOVEREIGN BASE AREA) — From ecologic rejuvenation to culture conservation and community resilience, UK and Cyprus cooperation in Akrotiri cuts across borders—bonds of mutual goal and respect.

Wetland Restoration & Eco-Tourism

Some of the first Darwin Plus projects (2021–2024) involved BirdLife Cyprus, Terra Cypria, RSPB, and SBAA Environment Department rehabilitation of Akrotiri and Cape Pyla wetlands. The project reconciled reed-bed management, invasive plant eradication, and cattle grazing for sustainable tourism and learning conservation .

Uncovering Ancient Akrotiri

With the University of Leicester, Department of Antiquities of the Republic of Cyprus, and the DIO Conservation Stewardship Fund, Ancient Akrotiri Project has uncovered Roman harbour remains at Dreamer’s Bay—preserving heritage and involving RAF and local people in training and site conservation .

Homes That Care

£20 million has been spent by the UK DIO’s APOLLO scheme on seismically robust solar-powered houses—34 new family houses at RAF Akrotiri and 138 at Dhekelia—with EV charging and local green space. It enhances quality of life with environmental awareness of ambitions.

Inspiring Future Environmental Stewards

The UNFICYP-funded UN Youth Champions for Peace and Environment programme recruits young people from north and south Cyprus to renew buffer-zone habitats and promote reconciliation—British Council funded by.

Conservation of Vulnerable Species

A 2022 Darwin Plus-funded conservation initiative protected the critically endangered Ipomoea sagittata Akrotiri morning-glory—seeds and marshland habitat conserved by fencing and specialist planting.

A Shared Blueprint

By successive governments, SBAs such as Akrotiri demonstrate that there can be prosperity through cooperation. Rehabilitation policy in partnership, archaeological surveys, housing provision, youth schemes, and wildlife conservation are creating a healthy environmental and cultural tissue between British and Cypriot policymaking.

“Diplomacy can grow from sown fields, shared classrooms, and interlocked roots,” a community volunteer says.

As Akrotiri grows, these companies are a testament to how societies and dependent communities thrive—when peace is built together.
