Jeddah/Washington/Kyiv, March 12, 2025 – In a significant diplomatic step, the United States and Ukraine have launched a new initiative for lasting peace in Ukraine during a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The meeting was held under the patronage of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Delegations from both countries praised the courage of the Ukrainian people in defending their nation and agreed that now is the right time to begin a process toward a lasting peace. The Ukrainian delegation expressed its gratitude to President Donald Trump, the U.S. Congress, and the American people for their role in achieving meaningful progress.
One key outcome of the meeting was Ukraine’s willingness to accept the U.S.-proposed immediate and interim 30-day ceasefire—provided that Russia also agrees and implements it. This ceasefire may be extended by mutual agreement. The United States emphasized that Russian reciprocity is crucial for the peace process and stated that it would convey this message to Moscow.
Another major decision was the resumption of U.S. security assistance to Ukraine. Washington announced that it would lift the pause on intelligence sharing with Kyiv and resume military aid.
Beyond military and diplomatic matters, the humanitarian situation was also a key focus. Both sides stressed the importance of humanitarian measures during the proposed ceasefire. These include the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of Ukrainian children who had been forcibly taken.
To pave the way for a long-term solution, the United States and Ukraine agreed to immediately appoint negotiation teams and begin discussions on a lasting security framework for Ukraine. European partners are expected to be involved in this peace process.
Another significant agreement concerns Ukraine’s economic development: Both countries committed to concluding a comprehensive agreement as soon as possible to develop Ukraine’s critical mineral resources. The aim is to strengthen Ukraine’s economy and ensure long-term stability and security.
With these negotiations, diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine have taken a new turn. It remains to be seen how Russia will respond to these proposals and whether the path to lasting peace can be secured.
