The fifth edition of the India-Australia joint military exercise AUSTRAHIND 2026 got underway on 19 October at the Foreign Training Node, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, bringing together approximately 120 personnel each from the Indian Army and the Australian Army for a two-week training programme running until 1 November 2026.
The exercise is being conducted under the theme "Joint Sub-Conventional Operations in Island and Coastal Environment under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate." Its stated aims include enhancing interoperability, jointmanship, and operational coordination between the two armies, as well as building a shared understanding of tactics, techniques, and procedures suited to island and coastal terrain.
Training activities will span joint planning, tactical drills, and combat-oriented exercises in realistic operational conditions, incorporating aerial and maritime dimensions. Specific focus areas include coordinated operations in coastal and island environments, surveillance and reconnaissance, protection of vital installations, and response to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief contingencies, alongside an exchange of professional experience and best practices.
The Indian Army contingent is drawn from the Garhwal Rifles, together with personnel from other arms and services. Their Australian counterparts come from 13 Brigade. The previous, fourth edition of the exercise was held at Irwin Barracks, Perth, Australia, from 13 to 26 October 2025.
A notable addition to this year's edition is the participation of an observer delegation from New Zealand — the first time a third country has joined the exercise in such a capacity. According to India's Ministry of Defence, AUSTRAHIND 2026 is intended to further strengthen military-to-military cooperation, interoperability, and mutual trust between India and Australia, and to reinforce their shared commitment to peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
